The Lake Irrigation Pump Buying Guide: 6 Steps To Getting It Right The First Time
Everything a lakefront owner needs to know before buying a pump system, in plain English. About a 5 minute read.
Step 1: Know why lake water wins
If you live on the water and pay the city to irrigate your lawn, every watering month is a bill for water your lake gives away free. A pump system is a one-time purchase that replaces that bill.

Step 2: Learn the parts that have to match
A working system is not just a pump. It is a pump, a mounting base, a suction hose, a filter, and the fittings that connect them, and they have to match each other. A pump without the right filter clogs. A hose that does not fit the pump inlet never primes.
Whatever you buy, from anyone, make sure every part is confirmed compatible before you pay.
Step 3: Size the horsepower to your property
Sizing is where owners most fear buying wrong. Pick too high and you waste electricity. Pick too low and the pump struggles. The honest ladder:

Step 4: Check your power
The 115V models plug into any standard outdoor outlet with an 8 foot cord. No electrician. If you have a dedicated 220V circuit near the water, the 220V option is more efficient on longer run times.
Step 5: Plan for the unglamorous parts
Priming: a centrifugal pump needs to be filled with water before first start, and a good system includes the check valve that keeps it primed. Winter: in northern states the pump comes out before freeze-up, which is why quick-connect fittings matter. Ask about both before buying any system.
Step 6: Decide where to buy
You have two real routes. Piece it together yourself from separate listings, which can cost less in dollars if you know exactly what you need and get every part right the first time.
